Professional Narrative

Dr. Shaitelman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She is a board-certified radiation oncologist with expertise in breast cancer treatments. Dr. Shaitelman treats all types of breast cancer and is interested in targeted radiation treatments, the interaction of radiation, breast cancer and the immune system, and lymphedema. Dr. Shaitelman is the Medical Director of the Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema Screening Initiative, as a part of which, prospective lymphedema surveillance has become a part of the standard evaluation of breast cancer patients at MD Anderson. As a direct result, over 4,000 breast cancer patients at MD Anderson have had volumetric arm measurements and symptom-based lymphedema screening. She is a co-Investigator on an actively accruing NIH funded clinical trial, Post-Radiation Lymphatic and Systemic Immunity Changes in Post-Radiation Lymphedema development, examining the immune etiology of breast cancer-related lymphedema following radiation treatment. Dr. Shaitelman is the Principal Investigator of the Preoperative Radiotherapy to Elicit Critical Immune Stimulating Effects (PRECISE) trial, in which targeted radiation is delivered to breast cancers prior to surgery. The primary goal of this research is to understand the biological impacts of radiation in this setting and to determine if radiation may elicit an immunogenic response in these breast cancers.
