Professional Narrative

Paola Salvatore, MD, is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Parma University in Italy, and research associate in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Recently she also was promoted to associate professor of psychiatry by the Italian Ministry of Education. A Parma University magna cum laude graduate with a thesis on the biology of suicide, she specialized in psychiatry at the same university with a dissertation on the conceptualization of mixed states in Kraepelin’s and Weygandt’s works. She also co-authored the Italian translation and commentary of Weygandt’s monograph on mixed states.

Dr. Salvatore received two NARSAD Young Investigator Awards to study the psychopathology of first psychotic episodes and investigate categorical versus dimensional diagnosis in first lifetime psychoses. In collaboration with researchers at University of Texas at Tyler and Swinburne University in Melbourne Australia as well as at the VA Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts, she works on nonlinear dynamics analysis of psychomotor activity rhythms monitored by actigraphy to define biomarkers of psychopathology including suicidal ideation and behaviors.
