Professional Narrative

I am consultant Gastroenterologist and hepatologist and I have been working and caring for patients with liver diseases since 2016 as a specialist. My long-term personal goal is to provide sound clinical data for Liver diseases in Nigeria that can be translated to clinical practice changing policies. I will achieve this through a constant process of refining my research skill and questioning current standards of care.

I have closely worked with Prof. Edith Okeke on several collaborative research like the Prevention of liver fibrosis in Africa (PROLIFICA) as research coordinator recruiting over a third of the patients and ensuring the smooth running of the huge research that recruited 600 patients. I also served as Study coordinator for D43 Seed grant for HIV malignancy and currently, ongoing study coordinator for the U54 project 1 study on epigenetics biomarkers of Hepatocellular carcinoma. My interest has been in liver cirrhosis and its complication. As part of my fellowship, I carried out a research non- invasive predictor of esophageal varices in liver cirrhosis patients. I am also currently the PI investigating the contribution of Aflatoxin in HCC a D43 seed grant, and “The relationship between gut dysbiosis and liver fibrosis” a U54 funded seed grant. I have participated and contributed in a number of research works published in peer reviewed journals.

I am motivated and determined contribute to research in local content. As a medical student one thing that stroke me was striking absence of local data on some of the very common ailments in our environment such amoebic liver disease, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
