Director, Vascular Medicine Professor of Medicine,Vanderbilt University I
Location: United States
Dr. Joshua Beckman founded and is director of the Section of Vascular Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular. The overriding theme linking all of his career activities is vascular function in health and disease. He is an active clinical practitioner, caring for patients in all settings and receiving referrals for a wide range of cardiovascular and vascular medicine consultation including coronary artery disease, vasculitis, venous thromboembolism, vasospastic disorders, non-coronary atherosclerosis, secondary hypertension, and related medical issues. In addition to these activities, in coordination with the Pre-Admission Test Center, he has organized a perioperative beta blocker program, increasing the use of these medications in high-risk patients from 50% to more than 90%. Nationally, his clinical contributions are focused in two areas: the writing of guideline documents and participation in clinical specialty organizations. The motivation behind each of these is to advance the care of patients with vascular disease through improvements in the education of physicians and the lay public. Dr. Beckman’s primary research focuses on the mechanisms by which diabetes mellitus impairs vascular function. Secondary investigations involve studying the effect on endothelial function of non-diabetes-related insulin resistance, androgen deprivation, and vascular function in venous bypass grafts.
