Associate Professor, School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness Researcher, BIO5 Institute Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience
Location: United States
John Paul SanGiovanni serves as Associate Professor of Precision Nutrition in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and the BIO5 Institute. He has worked continuously in the field of retinal and brain science for over 30 years, holding positions at the Harvard Medical School (11.5 years), the International Nutrition Foundation (2 years), and The National Institutes of Health (19 years).
Dr. SanGiovanni has dedicated his career to developing food- and nutrient-based therapies for diseases with cardinal neurodegenerative and angiogenic features. He has worked in senior positions to guide large-scale multi-center phase III clinical trials at the NIH that have yielded standard-of-care treatments for age-related macular degeneration. Dr. SanGiovanni is currently applying an integrative omics approach to the study of conditionally essential retina-resident nutrients and the processes by which these nutrients influence molecular sensing and signaling systems – systems known to act in pathophysiology of atrophic and neovascular retinal diseases, substance use disorders, and schizophrenia.
