Professional Narrative

I am a Professor of Medicine, and Principal of the College of Health Sciences, Kampala, Uganda, and immediate past Dean of the School of Medicine. I have over 22 years' experience in HIV/AIDS care at different platforms including community trials with simple interventions such as safe water and cotrimoxazole prophylaxis to reduce morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV, hospital-based studies on basic tools like provider-initiated HIV testing and routine TB screening to improve access to HIV diagnosis, management of TB-HIV co-infections and timely initiation of anti-retroviral therapy in a hospital setting, epidemiological studies to understand immune recovery in long-term HIV treatment cohorts, laboratory-based studies to understand cellular mechanisms of suboptimal immune recovery, as well as clinical trials on innovative interventions of adjuvant therapy to maximize the benefits of antiretroviral therapy. I have been involved in evaluation of health systems and national policy review processes to inform national HIV/AIDS care policies. I have written a book entitled, "Efficient HIV/AIDS care in resource-limited settings" (ISBN 978-3-639-33430-2), a book chapter in the Springer book, "Women, Motherhood and Living with HIV/AIDS', A Cross-Cultural Perspective (ISBN 978-94-007-5886-5 and several publications in international peer-reviewed journals. In recognition of the contribution my work on optimizing HIV treatment outcomes and reducing HIV-associated morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, I won the 2013 Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award.

I have mentored over 50 trainees including local and international masters’ level, doctoral and post-doctoral research fellows as well as junior and mid-level faculty members. I was a working group member of the Afya bora Consortium for global health leadership training in Africa, and a mentor on the NIH-funded “Nurture” research training and mentoring program for career development of faculty at Makerere University. I am a member of the steering committee of the GloCal Consortium NIH Global Health Program for fellows and scholars at UCSF and the Research Enterprise to Advance a Cure for HIV (REACH) Collaboratory at Well Cornell Medicine and Training Advisory Committee on Uganda Cancer institute-Fred Hutch D43 program.
