Chiwan Koo, M.D., is interested in research on the chest, blood vessels and heart. Her current research interest focuses on subsolid nodule (SSN), a specific type of pulmonary nodule of uncertain malignant potential.
In particular, she seeks to evaluate a noninvasive, radiation-sparing method of determining the malignant potential of SSNs. She hypothesizes that different histopathologic properties of SSNs will correspond to different magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics, allowing discrimination of malignant from benign lesions.

Significance to patient care
Upon successful completion of the study, the optimal SSN MRI technique will be determined. This achievement may greatly revolutionize management of SSN, as serial surveillance will be possible with reduced cumulative radiation exposure and diminished need for invasive procedures.
